Situation Report

This is an unused battle situation report. The map depicts ground which is about 2.5 Km long by 1Km wide.

The battle is the Messines Ridge attack on 7 June 1917. Why Bert had this sitrep is unknown, his Division (23rd) was attacking further north as part of X Corps. The area depicted, which includes the Spanbroekmolen mine (SW corner of map), was an objective of 36th (Ulster) Division, part of IX Corps. Both Corps were part of Plumer's 2nd Army so maybe there was some mutual artilllery support. The cluster of buildings and road network (NE corner) is Wytschaete. The area "N" appears to be just over the road from the Wytshaete Military Cemetery. A magnified version of the map is here (600Kb).
